"My visit to Albert's" + some other stuff

Last week Sandra was gone from Tuesday morning very early until Thurs. night very late so I was in charge of the girls all that time...hence the lack of any sort of post. This week has started off very calmly so here I am! I will dedicate as much time as I need to produce for my readers a (hopefully) wonderful post! And yes Neil and Jan I will even include pictures b/c I figured out how to add them to the computer!

For the past 3 weeks I have been having the best weekends! After my post on adjusting I realized that b/c I reflected on the fact that I was not adjusting well I made some changes. I have no idea what those changes are but anyway I am enjoying myself thoroughly. It is amazing that even across the ocean in a new country we can create communities for ourselves...or maybe I should say that people can help create communities for us (us being anybody that moves to a new place). I feel very blessed to be surrounded by wonderful people here, as well as having people from home who care about what I am doing here...and although I cannot show appreciation all the time b/c it takes me too long to respond please know that I still care!!!!!

So my past three weekends. It started off with going to Albert's house. It was my first real train trip here by myself and it was so easy. I'm really going to enjoy having these trains taking me from one place to the next in a very short amount of time...not to mention the cheapness considering I get 40% off every trip (Deanne that includes you when you are here!!!!!!!).

Albert lives in Nuenen, which, for all those Van Gogh lovers (so Jan....) is where Van Gogh was born and spent the first years of his life. Albert didn't think that it was very important to tell me until we were basically driving out of the town...comeon it's obviously the first thing I should have been told and is the only thing I remember about the town...haha;) (I'm joking...Albert was just a little concerned that that would happen if he told me). I also got a tour of Helmond where there's a big castle (there's a picture of it floating around somewhere in this blog) and where Albert saved the day by showing some policemen how to turn on a bike lock cutting machine.

we also went to a modern art musuem where we thoroughly enjoyed the elevator that sang to us as we went up and down...I think we spent most of our time going up and down just to hear it sing and even joined in at some parts. I also got to play a game and of course did miserably.

Oh the museum was in Eindhoven, the 5th largest city in the Netherlands...just to give you a little bit of information! On Sunday we of course went to church but also went to a place where 13 trees fell down in the huge storm we had the week before....so sad. Maybe we could have put our strength together and put them back up but we were in our Sunday clothes (see picture).

Albert's family is very very nice...and I can say that for all his family b/c I basically met everyone...haha. If anyone wants to figure out where Albert gets his mannerisms come and meet his father:D (don't worry Albert you are still an individual)! They were very welcoming! I think I mentioned it before but his brother and wife, Menno and Rieke, lent me a guitar! And Menno even stopped in to visit this weekend but unfortunately I was gone when he came...but it shows how caring they are. Definitely part of the community that makes my stay here so wonderful:).

Onto my next weekeend...last weekend I went to Aafke and Adrie's who live in Amersfoort. Aafke is mom's cousin and they came to visit in Canada 2 years ago so when I came here they were very happy to have me to their house. Amersfoort is .5 hours away so they came and picked me up so that I know the way to drive. I felt so incredibly at home there and had a wonderful talking with them. I got to hear about the family that I have here and we talked about my family at home which sometimes is exactly what you need to do when you are missing them...it is nice to talk with people who know who I am talking about. We did not tour the old town this time but I will be going back soon and we can do that. Amersfoort supposedly has a beautiful medival centrum. I got to tour the newer parts which is full of very interesting houses...houses that we would never see in Canada...you know like round houses on posts and with funny angles. I did not take pictures but I will some day.

This weekend Hannah Vanderveen came over to my house. For those who don't know her she was roommates/housemates with Elissa for the first 2 years at Redeemer. She's now here doing 4 months at the Reformed school in Zwolle. We has a great time being 100% real tourists...you know the ones that whip out their camera's at every slightly nice building...hehe I loved it. I will post pictures from it soon. We went to Naarden Vesting which is a beautiful old fort that is still a fully functioning town today. It is surrounded by a moat and a wall and has bike paths all around. On Saturday we went to Utrecht to look around. It is another wonderful city with lots of canals. We really experienced the difference b/w Canadians and dutch people when we were at a cafe for lunch. It took us 45 minutes to order our food, the reason being that in Canada to call the waitress over by waving your hand seems to be quite rude and never has to be done b/c they always just come. I finally got up the courage to do it and she came right away. Well we got a good laugh out of it anyway. It's like the time in France when we just kept on ordering wine and coffie b/c the waiter wasn't offering the bill, which we didn't know the name of in French. Don't worry Elaine and Deanne...the dutch are much nicer and don't laugh when you don't know their terms for things!

We went to a canal side restaurant for dinner. To get to the restaurant you climb down stairs so the streets are above you. When we came out after dark there were lights in all the trees above us and it was one of the most beautiful scenes I have ever seen. Hannah's camera took better pictures so I will wait until she sends them to me so that I can post them!

This coming weekend Deanne comes!!!!!! Albert will be coming too and we are going to tour Amsterdam. I am so so so very excited...like jump up and down excited. I am reading a book about Amsterdam so that I have every detail of the city so that I know what I am looking at and can hopefully relay my knowledge. I have already been there twice; once with Henk for my own personal tour but it was short, and another time, this weekend actually, to go to a famous restaurant. It was called fifteen and it was started by Jamie Oliver, the naked chef, to provide unemployed young adults with jobs. It was a great place where they teach the kids to cook and we just got to sit and eat and eat and eat. If you go to a restaurant with Henk and Sandra you are required to order a started, entree and dessert, not to mention your glass is never empty of wine and as many coffies as your body can handle. But anyway that's a sidebar. This weekend we are doing full tour and it will be better b/c it is with close friends so we will have a great time. I might also go tomorrow with Carlijn to see the Anne Frank huis b/c she has the day off school. It will be fun to do that with her...a good way to bond and have some fun together.

So I am going to stop now. I have so many things to talk about but I will save them for another time so my readers have some rest and my fingers as well. I hope everyone is doing well.

Wow, that was a post and a half! Only two pictures though :( Did you get to see Holland's tallest church tower in Utrecht too?... the one that's not actually attached to the church?

I probably don't have to tell you how jealous I am that Deanne gets to go to Holland and I don't :( I'd better get a pretty good postcard, and a big package of droppies! (just joking, about the droppies, I do want a postcard). What else do you and Deanne have in store?

Have a fun time, and don't forget more pictures next time.

Jan

Nevermind there were three pictures, but you didn't explain the middle one.... what are you doing?

Jan,

Lynn was trying to make a little girl on the screen move left and right (by actually stand on a button for left or right) so that she wouldn't be caught by lightning strikes comeing down from the sky. ...only the diamond ones, as they bring in the good points!!

Very intelligent game... |-) lol

Deanne said...

hey lynn you are going to have to see the Anne Frank "huis" again this weekend...And I want to see all of the stuff you described in this blog too (minus that game...)...hmm, well I guess that wouldn't be so exciting for you. How about BELGIUM then eh??!!
(although if we do go to Aafke and Adries I would love to see the medieval 'centrum' (is that what you called it?) )
as for jan, well, mike's brother, who I borrowed a backpack from for this trip, made me promise to return it full of droppies...maybe he'll spare you two or three?

see you SOON
d.

...interesting how narrow minded people can be when it comes to droppies...

You CAN actually get them at the Zehrs and/or Sobeys (real dutch ones too) and then there are stores called 'Dutch-toko's' or 'Holland Winkel' (resp. Guelph and Fergus) where you can get most of them as they are imported from The Low-lands.

But I guess that sometimes life is just too simple? ;-)

...maybe people better bring back stuff you can NOT get in Canada.

Albert, Albert, Albert....

First off, it's the novelty of having them come from Holland.

Second, we can't get every kind over here.... like the ones that come in boxes that you get at the Aldi, I love those ones!

Lastly, I live in Montreal! Apparently it's the one spot in the world where the Dutchies didn't settle... there's not a droppie to be found! I'm dying, man!

So take petty, and share some droppies with a poor, salt addicted woman.

Albert said...

Ok Jan,

If I see an Aldi (cheapest grocery store on this continent, which actually has some high quality products) this weekend I'll make sure Deanne gets a box of droppies for you. I think I know which ones you mean, although they aren't the real salty ones... (in the box).

That Montreal doesn't have any Dutch influences is because the French are there already. These people are just too STUBBORN to accept any other culture. :P

Ps: Actually the Aldi has extremely good chocolat bars and they are dirt-cheap!

I love that my blog has stimulated conversation...even if there is a little tension;D! Jan we did see the domtoren but we did not go up this time b/c it was expensive and we found other ways to fill our time (remember the fact that we waited for 45 mins. to get served).

Now to join in on the droppies discussion...they are just so expensive over there...when yo do make it to the store that has them. Albert, Jan used to pay something like $2/100g for her precious addiction so the wonderful bags found at the Albert Heijn or Aldi (which I have not yet seen) are a wonderful gift!

Now Deanne we will see everything that your heart desires!!!!

Jeanne said...

Alright Albert, I'm expecting my box of droppies now (the purple box with the house-shaped ones, not the pink box with the boat-shaped ones). Lynn almost got the price right... it's 1.79/100g, so you can see that it's much cheaper to send friends over to pick some up.

And Lynn, you must find an Aldi! There's nothing like it in North America. Remember the ED in Aix? Think the same thing but half the price... it's great! And like Albert said, you can get some good quality stuff (like droppies).

Ok that's enough blogging for me for a while... I've gotta leave some space for other people (speaking of which, where are the other people... Elaine, Anna, Crazy Lady....?).

Ciao!

Jan - there's a cheaper place on earth than ED??! The 'dutch' in me is very impressed ... why are they not around here?

Lynn - i need to call you soon! mom has a cici card that i keep forgetting everytime i'm in Burlington. Forgive me please!

Deanne - just bring Jan's postcard back with you ... it'll definately get here faster that way :)

Lynn - i miss you!

Albert - you guys need some more mentally-stimulating games over there .. like 'Environmental Memory'. Excellent game in high demand here

Lynn - So THAT'S why no one came to rescue us from a huge lunch bill? We had to wave the waiter over?? The things one can learn too late ...

It's so sunny here today ... but bitterly cold. Hope things are nice over there. Deanne's not planning on dressing too warmly. Something about Dutch people being all superficial and fashion-obsessed. Bitchboots? Rolled up pants?

Well, i won't wade into the argument about where the cheapest droppies are, what brand is the best tasting, what color the box should be....what store sells what brand....CAUSE DROPPIES TASTE LIKE CWAP!!! If thats the best the Dutch can come up with....

Elaine - "Environmental Memory" in high demand??? - never heard of it....Cranium usage has plummetted the last couple of weeks though...

Jan - you're the crazy lady so don't try and confuse things here by blaming it on someone else.

Albert - if they twist your arm into going to the Aldi - get me some of that very good but cheap chocolate...

...i'm going to join in and say that yes you can buy droppies here in canada...but make sure you try some stroopwaffles while you're over there. wow they're definitely SO much better fresh! ...and get kees to make you spaghetti next time you go to utrecht.

and Lynn! i think i took a bus through amersfoort! oh to be traveling again...

Haha, the conversations here actually get very funny! Unfortunately no time today... BUSY!! (got to earn all those paid days off Neil ;-) ).

...need for MSN messenger seems to fade away.

Enjoy the weekend. We'll see how much of those 2* 32kg Deanne can offer for digestable goods. Wonder if she brings anything this way :S

the best comment here was jan's, about the economy of sending friends to Holland to pick up droppies...
plane ticket: $800
gas to montreal: $100
hours spent searching for an Aldi so jan can soothe her salt craving at less than 1.79/100g: priceless

i love it (and you jan!) :P
see you soon lynn and albert!!

And the result...

Friday evening after work I saw Lynn's place and the inside of one of the pubs there, where there were far too many Joe Averages drinking and smoking their frustrations away, so that when we came back, the Aldi was already closed / not open yet.
The next morning we had to go and pick Deanne of the airport in the early morning even before Aldi opening hours. When Deanne joined us, we decided to go into Amsterdam. All the way to the shopping centre, where there is no Aldi. We saw the Dam squarre and seriously,.... no Aldi, can you believe?! To handle the frustrations we went into some lunch room and got ourselves a good coffee with 'Grandmothers style' apple pie with a side dish of 'poffertjes'.
Then we looked around and saw tons of things, and even found two hidden R.C. churches, but ofcourse no Aldi!!
After some more coffee in a little glass tower (so we good oversee the whole area :D) we realized that there won't be any Aldi found this way, so we decided to go to Utrecht for dinner at one of those cozy places at one of the channels. Great place, but can't remember if we checked if there was an Aldi (Lynn? Deanne?).
Sunday was seriously relaxing (good droppies in church Lynn), but then even if we did find an Aldi, in the woods or in that little old and very well defended town, that would have been open at the time... still Sunday...

Sorry Jan and Neil, but sometimes things seems very easy, but they might be very hard to accomplish.

Next time better luck.

Albert.

I'm not surprised at all Albert.... the Aldi in Aix had such weird hours and such an obscure location that we (the exchange students) were sure that it was just a front for the mafia..... how else could they sell such quality products at such low prices? That's why I stuck with ED.

Neil - I'm not the crazy lady, but if he/she doesn't fess up soon I'm going to have to spoil it for everyone and reveal who it is.

Jan

PS. Did Deanne bring bitchboots to Holland???!?!?!

crazy lady said...

I'm the only one who wears bitchboots.

Ok...I'm trying to follow Albert's iteneray and it seems that the goal of this day was to visit an Aldi but no one actually spent anytime looking for it. THis would not be such a hard task Albert if you spent some time looking for it- not doing other things and then noticing after the fact that you didn't see one...

So I'm obviously not the crazy lady - I would never think of impersonating someone like that....plus I don't wear those type of boots - although I am not ashamed to admit that I have no idea what they are....

Seems that Jan knows too much about this.....

there's no need for me to post about the weekend b/c albert nicely took care of it for me:D...haha. Neil you hit the nail on the head...we (or at least I) completely forgot to look for the Aldi and then afterwards Deanne and I were talking about it and realized that we didn't find it...haha the lack of looking contributes to that! Although we did discuss that present buying is best left for the end...you know as you're walking through the airport thinking you forgot something and then realize that your bag is extremely light for some reason.

Am I allowed to throw out some suggestions of who crazy lady is? The fact that Anna and Jan know but Neil and Albert do not leads me to point my finger at my wonderful brother-in-law...Derek??? hummm.

I'm going to have to start monitoring my blog...the word "-----boots" is coming up too often...comeon guys let's keep our language clean here please;D.

hey lynn speak for yourself- I'm with albert on this one: i definatly thought about thinkining about remembering to maybe consider looking for an aldi in amsterdam...a top priority it was...
